“Women Belong in the Kitchen”

A tweet by Burger King UK on 1:01 AM PST during International Women’s Day said five words: “Women belong in the kitchen.”

The tweet was then followed up by “If they want to, of course. Yet only 20% of chefs are women. We’re on a mission to change the gender ratio in the restaurant industry by empowering female employees with the opportunity to pursue a culinary career.”

Although the tweet was meant to promote Burger King’s movement to involve more women in the culinary field, their execution did not meet the encouragement and support they expected. The thread below the tweet was a mixture of anger and confusion from users objecting to how the tweet used sexism as “clickbait” and a shock factor for more exposure.

Burger King UK initially defended their tweet by replying to users in the comments that were opposing this form of advertising. However, Burger King UK later apologized with a tweet saying “We hear you. We got our initial tweet wrong and we’re sorry. Our aim was to draw attention to the fact that only 20% of professional chefs in UK kitchens are women and to help change that by awarding culinary scholarships. We will do better next time.”

The original tweet has since been deleted because of “abusive comments in the thread.”
