October 1st marks the first day where college students can apply for financial aid for the 2020-2021 school year.

FAFSA stands for Federal Application for Federal Student Aid and grants study loans, work-study programs, and even merit-based scholarship. Applications and checking whether you are eligible for federal aid is free as well (not every student who applies will be granted the FAFSA). All in all, this program will truly help pay for your schooling if you are qualified.

“So, how do I know if I am eligible?” you may ask. According to studentloanhero.com, the following are the essential requirements to apply for FAFSA:

1. Be a U.S. Citizen, permanent resident or eligible non-citizen, and have an authentic Social Security Number

2. Have at a minimum a high school diploma or a GED (General Education Development) Certificate

3. Be an enrolled student in an eligible degree or certificate program

4. Maintain at least the minimum GPA

5. Demonstrate your family’s financial need

There are three deadlines that applicants should be aware about: the college’s deadline, home state deadline, and the federal deadline (June 30, 2020). Although the deadline date is months away, it is highly recommended that the FAFSA application is filled out as soon as possible because you will receive a higher chance of getting more financial aid.
