On Wednesday, October 21, human remains were found in a Florida reserve and were confirmed to be the remains of Brain Laundrie, who the FBI have been searching for as a person of interest in Gabby Petito's death.

Laundrie was Petito’s fiance and allegedly the last person to see Petito before her disappearance.

The two had reportedly gone on a trip together in August, but Laundrie had returned to his parents’ house on September 1 alone and with no sign of Petito. Soon after, Petito’s parents reported her missing on September 11, and her remains were found a week later in Wyoming.

Meanwhile, Laundrie’s parents also reported him missing on September 17, saying that they last saw him four days prior.

On October 20, Laundrie’s parents informed law enforcement that they would be searching the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park on Wednesday.

On that day, Laundrie’s remains and a backpack, which seemingly belonged to him, were found.

However, the FBI suspects that this may not be an innocent coincidence and that Laundrie’s parents had most likely assisted their son escape the police.

"Supposedly, within a very short period of time, they found not only a backpack and a notebook but his remains," said the criminal defense attorney on the case. "That, to me, is going to reignite suspicion as to what their involvement may or may not have been."
