Alec Baldwin in the parking lot outside the sheriff’s office in Santa Fe, N.M., after he was questioned about the shooting on the set of the film “Rust” on Thursday.

On October 21, Halyna Hutchins, the film cinematographer of Rust, was accidentally shot and killed by actor Alec Baldwin. Handed the gun by an assistant director of the film, Baldwin was also told the firearm was “cold,” meaning it contained no ammunition.

However, this was unfortunately false as Halyna Hutchins and film director Joel Souza were struck by live rounds from Baldwin’s prop. While Souza was only shot in his shoulder and later survived, Halyna was not as fortunate. The bullet pierced Halyna’s chest, promptly proving to be fatal in the University of New Mexico Hospital where she was flown after the incident.

An affidavit from the search warrant stated that the prop handed to Baldwin was one of three guns laying in a cart near the site. The assistant director said he was not aware the firearm was loaded when he handed it to Baldwin. Witnesses state that before the incident, there had been two other prop gun discharges on the set, but were not officially reported to the production company.

Rust Movie Production’s protocol prohibits the use of real ammunition loaded in guns, so how a “hot gun” made its way into the site is being questioned. The investigation for the cause of the disaster “remains active and ongoing,” with multiple detectives interviewing witnesses and finding evidence.
