In Hawaii, on November 10, 2021, Isaac and Lehua Kalua were charged with second-degree murder after being arrested for the murder of their adoptive daughter, Isabella “Ariel” Kalua.

"Unfortunately, what began as a search for a missing girl turned into a murder investigation focused on the Kaluas. While we are unable to discuss the details at this time, we believe that the evidence leads to the Kaluas and no one else," said the Interim Honolulu Police Chief, Rade Vanic, during a news conference.

Police suspect that the Kaluas killed Isabella sometime in August 2021, just a few weeks before they reported her missing in September.

The police also added that the statements they received from the Kaluas did not seem to add up, and that the evidence they found pointed to them as her killers.

Additionally, a statement from Isabella’s sister, who the Kaluas had also adopted, detailed that she had seen Isabella in a cage, duct-taped, and not breathing, but that her adoptive parents had told her to “keep [it] a secret.”

Isabella’s sister also told the police that Isabella had been duct-taped and locked up several times because she would often get caught trying to sneak around at night and would ask for food.

Although authorities have searched the adoptive parents’ house and the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, which is where Isaac works, they have been unable to find Isabella’s body.

The couple has yet to hire an attorney and is currently being held by police without bail.
