On Monday, October 14, Taco Bell withdrew 2.3 million pounds of seasoned beef from 21 states due to metal shavings found in the food by a customer.

The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection says that three customers found metal scraps in their food items and alerted a federal regulatory agency on Saturday. Julie Masino, head of Taco Bell North America, responded to shocked and outraged consumers saying, “Nothing is more important than our customers’ safety, and nothing means more to us than their trust… as soon as we received the first consumer complaint, we immediately acted to remove the product from the affected restaurants and proactively worked with the supplier to inform the USDA of our steps to protect our guests”.

Kenosha Beef International, Taco Bell’s beef supplier, also is working to remove all contaminated meats. They say they want to “help protect [their] customers and the folks that come into [Taco Bell’s] stores.”

This, however, is not the first time that Taco Bell has had complications with their food items. Just last summer, the franchise had a shortage of tortilla chips which ignited backlash on social media.

Luckily, the company did not suffer major financial damage but did suffer a decrease in sales.

Consumers with questions about the recall can call 1-800-TACOBELL from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday.
