NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, has sent out a call for help. They are looking for innovative and brilliant inventors to assist them in their efforts to explore the stars, even offering a total of $35,000 in rewards. All you have to do is design a toilet that can function on the surface of the Moon.

However, NASA won’t take any random toilet. The toilet must be able to withstand zero-gravity, which poses a serious issue for anyone attempting this. After all, how can one stop the waste from floating back up? An additional obstacle that one must overcome is the issue of water; the toilet must be able to conserve water while also maintaining a clean, safe environment. People must also plan for this toilet to be used by female astronauts. If not obvious enough, the toilet should be easy to use while also conserving power. Some extra guidelines include making it quieter than a normal bathroom fan, weighing less than 33 pounds, having a smaller cubic volume than .12 cubic meters, and having the ability to support a two-person crew for 2 weeks.

This task is unbelievably difficult for the average person, so it’s not shocking that such a high price is offered. The person who submits the most successful product will receive $20,000. The second place winner will receive $10,000. The third place winner will receive $5,000. All designs will be due by August 17, so make sure to submit all your final designs before then. NASA will announce the winners of this contest in October. While these constraints are quite demanding, one must consider how important this is; their toilet could literally make history (and waste).
