Another Round of 2020 for Lake Jackson, Texas

On September 26, citizens near Houston, Texas were warned not to use or drink tap water, as it may be contaminated with brain-eating amoebas.

On Friday, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality issued an emergency water advisory to eight communities who use the water provided by the Brazosport Water Authority, a wholesale water provider. But the early morning of the following day, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) shared on Twitter “most Brazosport Water Authority users” can safely use and drink their water except Lake Jackson residents. The citizens of Lake Jackson are still urged to heed the “DO NOT USE” Water Advisory.

The city became aware of the amoeba after a six-year-old boy was infected. In a news release, Modesto Mundo, the city manager, shared “On September 8th, 2020, the City of Lake Jackson was contacted by the Brazoria County Health Department about a 6-year-old boy that was hospitalized due to a rare and often fatal brain-eating ameba, Naegleria Fowleri.” After several tests,“ the results of the CSC’s preliminary test came back as three samples being positive for Naegleria Fowleri” on September 25th.

Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the “brain-eating amoeba,” is a microscopic, single-celled organism that can cause an infrequent and devastating infection on the brain called Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms of PAM appear about one week after infection and may include headache, fever, nausea, seizures, hallucinations, and more.

And unfortunately, most cases of PAM have been fatal (141/145 in the U.S.).
