On December 10, 2020, DC Comics announced that Batman is returning in a four-issue comic book series.

With the release of the cover of the new issue, DC announced that a Black character will take on the position of the new Batman. This will be the first-ever Black Batman in the comic book series.

Even before the reveal of the cover, many have speculated that the next Batman would be a person of color and have been wondering which character the writers would choose. With the recent announcement, Tim Fox has been revealed as the new Batman.

Tim Fox first appeared in 1979, introduced as the estranged son of Lucius Fox and the former Batwing, Luke Fox’s brother. Recently, he has been making small appearances, first in “Family Ties,”( September issues), then in Batman #101, (October issues).

The new issues will debut February 23, 2021, written by John Ridley, the screenwriter for Oscar-winner, 12 Years a Slave. Each issue will have 64 pages and include backstories of other Gotham City heroes and villains.

In a recent interview by the New York Times, Ridley shared his thoughts on writing about the first Black Batman and introducing more representation to comics through his writing. “It’s great to have more representation,” he said. “When you create it, it’s an invitation to people to join in - with their time, their money, and sometimes with their talent.”
