Last Thursday, February 11, a massive pileup involving more than 130 cars blocked a highway in North Texas.

Six people were killed, and at least 65 were injured and sent to the hospital for treatment.

On Friday, the Tarrant County medical examiner identified five of the six dead as William Williams (54), Christopher Vardy (49), Michael Wells (47), Aaron Watson (45), and Tiffany Gerred (34).

The crashes started at around 6 AM, as many people were heading to work. Most of the victims involved were essential workers, including healthcare workers and police officers.

According to CBS DFW, police officers pinpointed the bad weather as the cause of the accidents. The cold weather and rain left roads icy and slick.

The I-35 highway was shut down as buses were brought for the people who weren't transported to hospitals and the vehicles blocking the highway were moved by the fire department.

"Even for the first responders here, walking is treacherous," said Matt Zavadsky, the spokesperson for the ambulance service in the area. An ambulance responding to the crashes had ended up crashing into a car, causing a minor crash.

Many videos of the crash were posted over social media, one even showing an 18-wheeler crashing into the pile and nearly flipping over the divider on the highway.

It took over 24 hours to get the cars cleared, and the highway remained closed until the following Friday morning.

"Quite frankly, for many of us, this is a career event,"  Zavadsky said. "You know, many of us have been in this profession for a very long time. We train for this type of scenario, but you never really expect it to happen."
