The FBI has said that it is targeting a possible suspect for the death of U.S. Capitol police officer Brian Sicknick.

Sicknick died on January 7, 2021, after being hit in the head by a fire extinguisher at the January 6 riot led by supporters of Donald Trump.

According to a Capitol police statement at the time, he was injured “while physically engaging with protestors” and died in a local hospital the day after.

The exact cause of the injuries and Sicknick’s death has not yet been discovered, but recently agents in the investigation suspect that it may have been a chemical irritant, such as bear spray or mace, that he inhaled during the riot.

Although chemical irritants are known as nonlethal deterrents, they can still cause health risks and even death for some with underlying health conditions.

Officials say that a video posted online shows a person attacking many officers, including Sicknick, with what seems to be bear spray. They also say that there is video evidence of the assailant discussing the use of bear spray, which is made of red pepper oil, to attack officers.

According to New York Times, investigators have been able to narrow down a potential suspect this week, but have not identified the suspect yet.

With the evidence that investigators have obtained, prosecutors are likely to convict the assailant with charges of assaulting an officer, but the death of Officer Sicknick could increase the charges held against the suspect.

In addition to Officer Sicknick, four others died after the riot, while more than 100 were injured.

“Our promise to Brian’s family is that we will never forget his sacrifice,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said, during a ceremony in which lawmakers paid tribute to Sicknick. “Each day, when members enter the Capitol, this temple of democracy, we will remember his sacrifice and that [of] others that day, who fought so hard to protect the Capitol and the Congress.
