Before Trump left office, millions of Pentagon's Dormant IP Addresses …
An unnamed Florida corporation revealed that it had taken possession of IP Addresses that had previously belonged to the US military.
The Defense Department has given Florida startup Global Resource Systems LLC control of roughly 175 million IPv4 addresses. The US Department of Defense gave their relinquishing control over a vital internet resource to a startup company to find security flaws in their networks.
Telecommunications behemoths like AT&T, China Telecom, and Verizon dominate the largest swaths of the Internet. Global Resource Systems LLC, a company created only in September with no widely available federal grants and no apparent public-facing platform, was now abruptly competing with these corporations.
However, it is unclear what officials intend to achieve, and the company itself is shrouded in mystery. GRS was founded in September of 2020, and it does not have a website yet. According to Kentik's Doug Madory, a data flood aimed at IP addresses may aid the military in gathering information on threats or exploits.
According to Yahoo News, the military might be able to use the pilot's findings to prevent hostile governments or cybercriminals from stealing dormant IP addresses. This also ensures that the US can handle IP addresses and use them as required.
This controversy has sparked speculation because there have been verifiable public acts, such as the apparent ownership or connection of IP Addresses by a private corporation with no background, no website, no employees, and an address in a rented office room.
The US Department of Defense has stated that the addresses are still theirs and have not been passed to someone else. However, the timing is odd, particularly given Trump's firing of the Secretary of Defense not long before this occurred.
