A former Alabama corrections officer accused of helping an inmate escape, Vicky White died of suicide on Monday, May 9.

Authorities report that  56-year-old Vicky White helped Casey White, a murder suspect, escape from the Lauderdale County Detention Center on April 29, the day she was set to retire.

Both were finally caught on May 9 when police cars rammed their car into a ditch in Evansville, Indiana.

Upon approaching the car, officers found Vicky White with a wound to her head and a gun in her right hand.

Vicky White was transported to a nearby hospital, where she died a few hours later. Authorities suspect that she shot herself shortly after the car crash.

"All of her co-workers are devastated. She was a model employee," Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton said. "What in the world possessed her to pull a stunt like this? The only conclusion I guess we can come to at this point is just a jailhouse romance."

On the other hand, Casey White was immediately arrested after the car crash and sent back to Alabama on Tuesday night for a hearing, where he was charged with a count of escape in the first degree in addition to the murder charges he was already facing.

"He certainly didn't show any remorse for anything he's done. That's supposed to be his girlfriend and she's dead and he hasn't shown any remorse that I've seen since that happened," Singleton said. "He used her, which they always do. Unfortunately, Vicky lost not only everything she had but her life."

Meanwhile, Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding said, “Their plan was pretty faulty. They're criminals, their plan was faulty and it failed. Thank God.”
