A volcano in Indonesia erupted on the morning of Sunday, November 17, 2019, causing loads of ash up to 3,200 feet into the air. The volcano, called Mount Merapi erupted at 10:46 a.m local time and lasted for 155 seconds. The ash was blown to the west, filling Benyubiru village in Central Java with ash.

Agus Wibowo, a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency said that people should stay at least 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) from the exclusion zone around the volcano’s crater.

Researchers from Technical University of Munich published a study that predicts when volcanoes will explode. Geoscientists have been using seismic measurements to observe and measure underground movement. This new study’s findings could be groundbreaking to further early prediction of volcanic explosions.

“Our investigations show that the physical properties of the plug dome change over time,” TUM Professor H.Albert Gilg said. “Following an eruption the lava is still easily permeable, but this permeability then sinks over time. Gases are trapped, pressure rises and finally the plug dome bursts in a violent explosion.”
