In 2017, there were nearly 50,000 deaths by suicide in the United States alone along with the 1,500,000 attempts in suicide.

2019, September 8 to 14 is National Suicide Prevention Awareness week. This is a week where people are encouraged to share their stories and resources to spread awareness about suicide, hence its name: National Suicide Prevention Awareness week.

According to America’s Health Ranking United Health Foundation, suicide is the second leading cause of death in the age groups of 15 to 19, in correspondence to the mass increase in percentage of high school students who have seriously considered or attempted suicide.

So, how can I tell if someone is suicidal?

● They may talk about wanting to kill themselves, feeling lonely, hopeless, etc.

● Withdrawal from family and friends; saying goodbye to family and friends

● Frequently drinking alcohol and using illegal substances

● Giving away precious belongings

● Change in habits (eating, sleeping, daily routine)

How can I help save a life?

● Be aware of those around you

● Understand suicide and the person’s perspective

● Talk, listen, and show them you care

● Offer (professional) help

● Do not promise to keep someone’s suicidal thoughts a secret

(you may have to seek help to save them)
