On Thursday, September 22, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, and the UN relief agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) reported that a boat carrying 120-170 migrants and refugees from Lebanon was found wrecked near the coast of Syria. At least 77 people were killed and 20 are currently undergoing treatment.

“This is yet another heart-wrenching tragedy and we extend our deepest condolences to all those impacted,” said Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Each of the four agencies is working together with Lebanon authorities to help support the bereaved families, while UNHCR is also providing injured survivors with material aid in Syria.

This shipwreck is not the first to occur in the East Mediterranean region, which is known as the “deadliest known migration route in the world.”

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), there have been over 17,000 deaths and 24,000 missing migrants reported in the Mediterranean region since 2014.

“This is just tragic. No one gets on these death boats lightly. People are taking these perilous decisions, risking their lives in search of dignity,” said UNRWA Commissioner-General, Philippe Lazzarini. “We must do more to offer a better future and address a sense of hopelessness in Lebanon and across the region, including among Palestine refugees.”
