On Friday, March 3, four U.S. citizens crossed the U.S.-Mexico border from Texas into Matamoros, where they were fired upon and kidnapped by unidentified gunmen.

Investigators believe that the gunmen mistakenly thought the victims–Latavia Washington McGee, Zindell Brown, Shaeed Woodard, and Eric James Williams–were involved with rival human traffickers.

The Americans had originally driven to Mexico to accompany McGee for a cosmetic medical procedure.

During their captivity, the victims were frequently relocated by the perpetrators to avoid rescue attempts, said Tamaulipas governor Américo Villarreal.

The two survivors, McGee and Williams, were found on Tuesday, March 7 in a wooden house near Matamoros, Tamaulipas. One of the deceased was also found inside the house, and the second was found outside. McGee was rescued unharmed; however, Williams had been shot in both legs. Williams was transported to a Texas hospital to undergo surgery for the wounds, according to his wife, Michele Williams.

Though the whereabouts of the victims have finally been discovered, the investigation of the incident is still ongoing. The FBI has stated that it is currently working “to determine the facts of what happened and to hold those responsible for this horrific and violent attack accountable for their crimes.”
