On November 24, a new variant of the coronavirus was discovered in South Africa and reported to the World Health Organization (WHO). This new strain has been given the name Omicron. Cases of the variation have been confirmed in many countries including the UK, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Botswana, and Israel.

Scientists claim Omicron is more resistant to vaccines and has faster growth than previous variants. In response to the discovery of Omicron, many countries have temporarily restricted travel with South Africa. Additionally, according to the head of the South African Medical Association, only 24% of South Africans are fully vaccinated, leaving open the possibility of this new variant spreading dangerously.

Patients with the variant reported having “a sore body and tiredness,” and many more mutations of the variant are expected by scientists. While not much about the variant is currently known, people should practice stricter social distancing and be wary of Omicron.
