World leaders travel to Carbis Bay, Cornwall in England to attend the G7 summit taking place from June 11 to June 13.

G7, or the Group of 7, represents the association of 7 of the most economically advanced countries (Canada, Germany, Italy, France, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States). Russia was a member of the former G8; however, it was excluded in 2014 for annexing Crimea, a global border dispute that the other G8 members were against. China is also not a member because their ratio of wealth to population makes their economy less advanced compared to G7 members.

The leaders of these countries and representatives of the European Union annually attend a G7 summit to discuss global matters such as world economy and safety. This year, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is hosting the summit in Carbis Bay Hotel and invited India, South Korea, and Australia along with the G7 and EU members.

The main topics for this year’s summit is recovery from COVID-19 along with climate change and international trade.

There have been campaigners advocating for climate change discussions with one group called Extinction Rebellion demonstrating in Cornwall with signs and protests. However, most of the discussions are behind closed doors; therefore, it will be difficult to know if the climate change message was received.
