Tornado in Kentucky Kills At Least 70

On December 10, tornadoes struck central and southern parts of the US, causing significant damage to several states.

More than 30 tornadoes were reported from six states, with Kentucky suffering from at least four of them.

An Amazon facility in Illinois, a candle factory in Kentucky, and a nursing home in Arkansas were all destroyed due to the tornadoes.

Kentucky suffered the most damage from the tornadoes, with an estimate of at least 70 casualties. Most of the casualties are from the collapse of the Mayfield Consumer Products candle factory, which collapsed while there were at least 110 people inside.

"They rescued 40," Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said at a news conference on Saturday, December 11. "There's at least 15 feet of metal with cars on top of it, barrels of corrosive chemicals that are there, it will be a miracle if anybody else is found.”

Since Saturday, Kentucky is officially under a state of emergency and the government has ordered federal assistance.

"The federal government is not going to walk away," said President Joe Biden during a press conference. "We're going to get through this."

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has sent several trucks, search and rescue teams, and temporary power systems to assist Kentucky.

"As I continue to get reports from my staff, local and state officials, we will work with the entire Kentucky federal delegation to support Governor Andy Beshear’s requests for federal assistance in order to aid these hard-hit communities with the funding and resources they need to rebuild,” Republican Sens. Mitch McConnell said in a statement.
