The Buffalo Bills (NFL) have released their punter Matt Araiza after he was accused of gang-raping a 17-year-old girl at an off-campus party.

Araiza gained an extreme social media presence for his powerful kicking, earning him the title of “punt god.” Araiza was drafted in the 2022 NFL Draft in the sixth round by the Buffalo Bills. He was quickly placed as Bills starting punter but was shortly removed in the wake of the lawsuit.

In a civil lawsuit filed by Attorney Dan Gilleon, representing “Jane Doe,” Araiza (21) was accused of sexual intercourse with a minor, which eventually turned into repeated assault. Araiza swiftly removed her from the party, which was being held in his residence, and took her to his bedroom. She was reportedly raped for an hour and a half.

The lawsuit explicitly states that there was visible blood, as all her piercings were forcibly pulled out. Filed in San Diego County Superior Court, the lawsuit asserts that Doe went in and out of consciousness while the assault took place. She vividly remembers the men that took turns assaulting her, which were reported to be Araiza and SDSU football players Zavier Leonard and Nowlin “Pa’a” Ewaliko.

Kerry Armstrong, Araiza’s lawyer, responded to the lawsuit by stating that all allegations are “just untrue.”

With the accusations garnering massive media attention, Buffalo Bills GM Brandon Beane responded, “This afternoon, we decided that releasing Matt Araiza was the best thing to do. Our culture in Buffalo is more important than winning football games.”

The case is still underway and is about to turn into a criminal investigation.
