House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy speaks on Capitol Hill on Jan. 21.

House Republican Chief Kevin McCarthy called President Donald Trump as rioters engulfed the Capitol on Jan. 6. A concerned McCarthy called Trump to ask him to take care of his followers. According to Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, a GOP representative from Washington, Trump at first was uninterested and claimed that it was Antifa and not his followers who were responsible for the riot.

In a deadly protest that ended up killing five people, the latest revelations of the call, first published by CNN, brought to the forefront the main issue of what Trump was doing and what he felt as his followers pushed their way into the city.

McCarthy told Trump that the rioters were Trump supporters and requested him to call them off, according to lawmakers briefed on the call. “Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are,” Trump responded, leading to an expletive-laden shouting match between the two. McCarthy then told Trump that the rioters were breaking into his office and McCarthy shouted, “Who the f–k do you think you are talking to?”

"He is not a blameless observer, he was rooting for them," one Republican House member said. Kevin McCarthy said on the floor of the House that the “President bears responsibility and he does."

Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives for his role in instigating the riot, for the second time, before he quit office last month. His Senate impeachment trial is currently over, and many GOP lawmakers told CNN that they agree that Senators should view Trump's appeal to McCarthy as proof of Trump's guilt.
