A U.S. Navy T-6B Texan II aircraft crashed into a home in Foley, Al.
 

In a residential area in Southern Alabama, a U.S. Navy training plane crashed, causing a major fire and eventually killing two pilots on board.  

The accident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2020. The U.S. T-6B Texan II crashed at Foley, 11 miles north of the Gulf Shores on the Gulf Coast of the state. According to the U.S. Navy's website, this type of aircraft is used to train Navy and also Marine Corps pilots.

The U.S Naval Air Force released a statement claiming that no civilians were injured in the crash. "Navy personnel are on scene and cooperating with local authorities to secure the area and ensure the safety of the local community," the statement read. 

The two aircraft pilots were an instructor and a student, a spokesman for the Naval Air Force, Cmdr. Zach Harrell said. The navy announced that it would not disclose the names of the pilots until 24 hours after the families were informed.

The aircraft had departed from the Naval Air Station at Whiting Field in Santa Rosa County, Fla., about 30 miles northeast of where it crashed. The accident, which occurred at 4:20 p.m, ultimately sent debris into a building, setting it on fire.

Foley Fire Chief Joey Darby told reporters that around the aircraft, a house, and many vehicles, there was a "large volume of fire." The fire has been completely extinguished since the interview. 

"It is with a heavy heart that we mourn two of our pilots who lost their lives during an aircraft crash in Alabama today... Rest in peace, Shipmates. We have the watch,” said the Chief of Naval Air Training.
